News Release for Lightbourn Catalog Your attention is invited to a newly published book entitled Lightbourn’s Picture Postcards of the Danish West Indies and U.S. Virgin Islands prepared by Sy Wengrovitz and Sheldon Heckman. John N. Lightbourn was a printer and publisher who operated out of his shop on Main Street, Charlotte Amalie during the first decades of the 20th century. The core of this book is a catalog of Lightbourn’s published cards and is a must-have book for postcard collectors and anyone else interested in Danish West Indies (D.W.I.) and U.S. Virgin Islands (U.S.V.I.) history or philately. It is a spiral-bound, soft-cover book of 248 pages and contains descriptions for each of the more than 1,200 picture postcards known to have been published by John N. Lightbourn with each card having its own unique alpha-numeric catalog number. The catalog includes over 300 postcard images (with many in full color) depicting scenes and people in the D.W.I and several other Caribbean islands thus providing a photographic record of how things were and what life was like during the first three decades of the 20th Century. In addition to the postcard listings, the catalog also provides information on the following: a brief history of the D.W.I. including its acquisition by the U.S., slavery and piracy in the islands, how the catalog numbers were developed and assigned, Lightbourn family history, a concise history of postcard collecting and development, information on Lightbourn’s Souvenir Booklets and his other printed ephemera, D.W.I. philatelic propaganda material, a system for identifying the different address side texts used by Lightbourn when he reprinted his cards, and much more. While the Lightbourn catalog is copyrighted, permission is given by the authors for readers to use the catalog numbers in their communications, in price lists and in published articles provided that the source for this information is also included. Sample pages of the Lightbourn catalog text are attached. The Lightbourn catalog is priced at $45 plus $12.50 handling and shipping by U.S.P.S. priority mail within the U.S. Shipping costs for destinations outside the U.S. will vary depending on location, so inquire about details if we must ship outside the U.S.. Questions regarding this offering for catalogs can be directed to the authors at www.SWengrovit@aol.com or Hecko@comcast.net. Also, we welcome any and all comments about our book especially any new listings for future editions of this book.

This is a wonderful vintage early 1930's postcard. Scene shows a view of the Compañía Nacional Cubana de Aviación Curtiss Ford Tri-Motor Airplane at the General Machado Airport in Havana, Cuba. The tail number of the plane is NC8408. Ford’s Tri-Motor aircraft was nicknamed “The Tin Goose”. To overcome concerns of engine reliability, Ford specified three engines and added features for passenger comfort, such as an enclosed cabin. Cubana was established on 8 October 1929 as Compañía Nacional Cubana de Aviación Curtiss, indicating its association with the Curtiss aircraft manufacturing company. It was one of the earliest airlines to emerge in Latin America. Cubana's predecessors were the Compañía Aérea de Cuba, founded in 1919, and the Compañía Aérea Cubana, founded in 1920 (both airlines flew out of Havana's Columbia Airport, which started operations in 1919). Those companies were dissolved soon after they started, however, due to the difficult economic conditions affecting Cuba (and many other nations) in the aftermath of World War I. Cubana de Aviación Curtiss started services in 1930 with Curtiss Robin aircraft, followed by Sikorsky S-38 amphibans and Ford Trimotors. Amphibious service linked the coastal mining areas in the eastern part of Cuba, while the land-based Curtiss Robin and Ford Trimotor aircraft served the major provincial cities. The Curtiss Aviation School, owned by the Curtiss airplane manufacturing company, had trained Cuban pilots starting in the 1910s, thus creating the expertise necessary for the emergence of Cubana. Among the early Cuban aviation aces was Agustín Parlá, a 1912 graduate of the Curtiss School, who had headed the Compañía Aérea de Cuba in 1919. Visits to Cuba by famous aviators, and news about their exploits, favored Cubana's start-up. They generated interest in aviation and its commercial possibilities in Cuba, at a time when civil aviation was mostly a recreational activity. Among them were the Spanish-Cuban aviator Domingo Rosillo, who completed the first flight across the Strait of Florida (Key West to Havana) in 1913, French aviator Charles Nungesser in 1924, and the American Charles Lindbergh in his "Spirit of St. Louis" airplane in 1928. After Cubana's founding, the Spanish aviators Mariano Barberán and Joaquín Collar completed the first transatlantic flight from Spain to Cuba in 1933, followed in 1936 by the first Cuba-to-Spain (Havana-Seville) flight by Cuban aviator Antonio Menéndez Peláez in an open cockpit, single-engine airplane. These and other feats promoted interest in long-distance flight. Pan American Airways (then known as Pan American Airways System or PAA) acquired Cubana in 1932, and the word Curtiss was deleted from the airline's name. Financial difficulties in the U.S.-based Curtiss aircraft manufacturing company, due to the deepening economic depression, partly motivated the sale. Cubana therefore became a subsidiary of Pan American Airways. At that time, Pan American had started to assemble a Latin American and Caribbean network, linking together air services in various nations with its own international routes in the Americas and the Caribbean. Pan American's own first-ever international scheduled service had started from Florida to Cuba in the 1920s (Key West-Havana). Acquiring Cubana therefore made sense to PAA's management as it expanded operations beyond Cuba toward the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean. Postcard is in near mint condition and is postally unused. A great addition to your collection! Buyer pays $1.95 postage in the USA. International orders $3.00. Florida residents must add 7% sales tax or provide resale certificate. Please check out magic-city's other quality auctions. Bid early - don't be shut out at the end. Good Luck!
