Bulgaria 9 Real Photo Postcards, 1930 Sent to a Friend by the US Ambassador, Folklorist Henry Shoemaker A small collection of Bulgarian postcards sent by US ambassador Henry Shoemaker to Mrs. A.S. Mealy of New York City. There are nine real photo postcards, plus a Curt Teich postcard of Shoemaker's residence in McElhatten, Pennsylvania. Several were probably taken by Shoemaker himself. Shoemaker owned several small newspapers in Pennsylvania when he was appointed ambassador to Bulgaria by Herbert Hoover. A dedicated folklorist who wrote a daily folklore column in one of his papers, he showed a particular interst in Bulgarian customs while he was stationed there. None of the cards is postally used; most have captions on the back in Shoemaker's hand, as indicated below. All are in very good condition, except as noted. A letter from Shoemaker to Mrs. Mealy is included. Free shipping world wide. Click here to see my other auctions. No writing on reverse. Published by Gr. Paskoff, Sofia. "Natives costumes, Bulgaria." Published by Gr. Paskoff, Sofia. "Returning from Palace after audience with the King.
