------------------------- Thank you for viewing one of my favorite collections! ------------------------- ITEM DESCRIPTION: Period category: ( ) 1900 - 1906, ( ) 1907 - 1917, (x ) 1918 - 1932, ( ) 1933 -1945 Postally unused pre-war postcard. Kyoto Maiko with 5-story-temple pagoda (probablly Toji (East Temple, see Picture 3)). In the back is an old Japanese stamp and postal mark in the Kyoto Post Office dated on November 11, 1929. The original holder must have it stamped at the post office for his/her memoir. Enjoy! Trivia: In Kyoto, you can actually see four 5-story-temple pagodas: in To-ji, Daigo-ji, Nina-ji and Yasaka-no-tou (Yasaka Tower). Of the four To-ji's is the most famous, also the highest (55 meters) of the existing old pagodas, as it can be seen from the platform of Kyoto Shinkansen (bullet train) Station. It was originally built in 826 by a buddhist monk Kobo-taishi Kukai. Later it was burned down to the ground four times. The pagoda we see today was dedicated by Tokugawa Iemitsu (Shogun-tycoon in Edo Era). These women were the highest class of prostitutes in the geisha community and were distinguished by their outlandish style and the habit of showing their naked toes, elaborate kimonos,decorated hairdo's,huge, high geta shoes (Koma-geta or mitsu ashi-three legs) and obi's worn in the front. The history of this particular class of prostitutes is facinating for the geisha postcard collector. Partially hand colored. The card is in fine condition, not posted, 1/3 divided back.
