POSTCARD DESCRIPTION: Vintage Postcard, approx. 5 1/2" x 3 1/2", real photo, fantastic image of two couples and their automobile in front of Yosemite Falls, probably people from Solvang on a trip. This postcard is from the personal album compiled by Miss Hilda Petersen between the years of 1908-1919. Miss Petersen was one daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul C. Petersen of Flaxton, North Dakota, where the family homesteaded as immigrants from Denmark. There are many postcards from Tyler Minnesota where the family had strong Danish ties with family and friends, and it is likely that they once lived in Tyler before moving to North Dakota. About 1912, Hilda and two of her sisters, Margrethe and Valborg, moved to Santa Barbara, California, and soon became some of the first settlers in the town of Solvang. The postcards of Solvang are particularly remarkable in chronicling the life of this famous Danish community, with many of the people in the photos identified with their full names. In 1917 Hilda moved back to Flaxton where she married Berman Jacobsen, who was a member of the class of 1912 at Danebod high school in Tyler, Minnesota. Just below you will find scans of the item offered in this listing, as well as scans of a letter from Hilda and Berman's daughter Myrna Petersen Jacobsen Hefley, from whom we acquired this collection. Also shown is a photo of Hilda and Berman circa 1960s. Please note that the letter and portrait are not included in this sale, and are shown here for provenance purposes only. Also, Mrs. Hefley's recollections do not seem to be entirely accurate, because the Petersen family was clearly homesteading in Flaxton as early as 1908, and the Petersen girls were in Solvang about 1912. It's certainly possible that Hilda took her family back to Solvang in the 1930s, but this collection ends at 1919. In our descriptions we will try and be as accurate as possible in identifying locations and people. Some images will be identified based upon information we find on some of the other items in the collection. If we are not certain, we will say so. If you would like to review all of the photos in the Petersen collection, just visit our eBay MomThrewItAway Store home page, enter the words PETERSEN SOLVANG into the STORE SEARCH BOX on that page, and check to search "in titles & description".
