Please scroll down to view all pictures of this auction. TITLE OF POSTCARD/S OFFERED: not titled DESCRIPTION: This is a rare and most unusual real photo postcard depicting who appear to be a young husband and wife, with their two children. Upon close inspection, it appears that the man and two young children have a medical condition which is called Ectrodactyly, sometimes referred to as the “Lobster-Claw Syndrome” (claw feet and claw hands). There is flowery penmanship in period ink on the verso which reads, “The Wonderful (?) Baby Evangeline (?) and Dolores Francis George Born Cleveland, Ohio.” Sadly, many people with such deformed limbs were sometimes employed as “freaks” at carnival or circus attractions. This real photo postcard appears to date to the 1920s to 1930s era, does not have any pre-printed information, and appears to be unpublished. This postcard evokes much empathetic emotion. USED: no POSTMARK: none DIVIDED VERSO: yes CONDITION: fair, with rounded corners, two corner creases at one corner, otherwise moderate wear and patina BUYER INFORMATION: Buyer pays U. S. shipping of $2.50, which also includes U. S. Postal Service Delivery Confirmation. Insurance is at buyer’s option. I DO: -accept PayPal. -accept some other forms of payment, but unknown checks may have to clear first, before delivery. -ship to foreign countries, but purchases which are paid for using Paypal, MUST be insured or registered, whichever is applicable to the destination country. This usually adds an additional $11.50 to the postage cost for the buyer. Also, please note that any item with a final bid value of $250 or more, and which is paid for using Paypal, MUST be sent USPS Express Mail, signature required. This, of course, adds significant cost to shipping for the buyer. Please contact me BEFORE bidding, if you have any questions -combine multiple purchases, of course. -add 7% Rhode Island Sales Tax for R. I. bidders with R. I. destination of delivery, as required. -attend to your emails and delivery of purchase, promptly, notifying you when I ship. -encourage your emails regarding any specific questions or comments, and especially, any goofs I may have made in my description…always looking to learn. I DO NOT: -end my auctions early to accept offers for purchase. -re-list my items that do not sell on eBay because I have other venues by which to offer them. -engage in “shill bidding”. ADDED COMMENTS: -The starting bid in my auction is merely the minimum amount I will accept, considering the various fees I’m charged by eBay. That starting bid, like in live auctions, represents a starting point for the bidding. The final bid is determined by the incremental bidding process, not to exceed the maximum amount the highest bidder is willing to pay to purchase that particular item for their use or collection. In live auctions, an old auctioneer saying states that it doesn’t matter where the bidding begins, but where it ends. I generally agree, but in the eBay world of silent auctions, I tend to be suspicious of auctions with starting minimum bids or reserves which have a great disparity with the actual value of that item…just my opinion. Please check my feedback, bid if you wish, and send funds with confidence…I’m from the “Old School”. Thank you for your participation. RESEARCH: “Ectrodactyly, sometimes referred to as the “Lobster-Claw Syndrome”[1] involves the deficiency or absence of one or more central digits of the hand or foot and is also known as split hand/split foot malformation (SHFM)[2]. The hands and feet of people with ectrodactyly are often described as "claw-like" and may include only the thumb and one finger (usually either the little finger, ring finger, or a syndactyly of the two) with similar abnormalities of the feet.[3] Ectrodactyly Classification and external resources ICD-10 Q71.6 ICD-9 755.4 OMIM 225300 DiseasesDB 32141 Genetics A large number of human gene defects can cause ectrodactyly. The most common mode of inheritance is autosomal dominant with reduced penetrance, while autosomal recessive and X-linked forms occur more rarely.[4] Ectrodactyly can also be caused by deletions, translocations, and inversions in chromosome 7 (7q).[5] The deletions in 7q can result in a contiguous gene syndrome that includes growth impairment, microcephaly, craniofacial manifestations, hernias, hearing loss, and mental retardation.[5] Translocations in 7q do not have as many abnormalities but are generally associated with most hearing loss cases.[5] This is why most cases of ectrodactyly are generally accompanied by another abnormality or linked to another syndrome (ex. EEC, LMS, ECP)[6]. Detailed studies of a number of mouse models for ectrodactyly have also revealed that a failure to maintain median apical ectodermal ridge (AER) signalling can be the main pathogenic mechanism in triggering this abnormality.[4] A number of factors make the identification of the genetic defects underlying human ectrodactyly a complicated process: the limited number of families linked to each split hand/foot malformation (SHFM) locus, the large number of morphogens involved in limb development, the complex interactions between these morphogens, the involvement of modifier genes, and the presumed involvement of multiple gene or long-range regulatory elements in some cases of ectrodactyly.[4] In the clinical setting these genetic characteristics can become problematic and making predictions of carrier status and severity of the disease impossible to predict.[7] Hearing Loss As mentioned in the Genetics section, ectrodactyly can be caused by various mutations to 7q. When 7q is mutated by deletion or translocation ectrodactyly can sometimes be associated with hearing loss.[5] Ectrodactyly, or Split hand/split foot malformation (SHFM) type 1 is the only form of split hand/ malformation associated with sensorineural hearing loss.[5] A study was performed in 2001 by the JC Self Research Institute, a division of the Greenwood Genetic Center, to test the split hand/split foot malformation with hearing loss as it pertained to being genetically Functionality The functional utility of the malformed limbs is discussed in issue 2481 of The British Medical Journal.[8] The affected persons can perform work that requires skillful manipulation, regardless of their handicap. The article says, “The needlework of some of the females is good; the handwriting of most is excellent. One individual is a boot maker, two others drive cabs, none finding difficulty in clothing themselves, and most do so with extraordinary rapidity, even to the lacing of boots....It is said of one that he is able in this way to lift pins from the floor with his feet.” Those with ectrodactyly are contributing members of society with their own jobs and careers[1]; many choose to have families and raise children[1]. In most daily tasks the health condition appears to have a small effect on their functionality. In 2006, the London Tate exhibition Single Shot featured a video of an unidentified person with ectrodactyly skillfully playing the piano with only four fingers[9]. Ectrodactyly in Species other than Humans Ectrodactyly is not only a genetic characteristic in humans, but can also occur in frogs and toads[10], mice[11], salamanders[12], cows[4], chickens[4], rabbits[4], marmosets[4], cats and dogs[13], and even West Indian manatees[4]. The following examples are studies showing the natural occurrence of ectrodactyly in animals, without the disease being reproduced and tested in a laboratory. In all three examples we see how rare the actual occurrence of ectrodactyly is. Wood Frog The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta performed a study to estimate deformity levels in Wood Frogs in areas of relatively low disturbance.[10] After roughly 22, 733 individuals were examined during field studies, it was found that only 49 Wood Frogs had the ectrodactyly deformity.[10] Salamanders In a study performed by the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue University, approximately 2000 salamanders (687 adults and 1259 larvae) were captured from a large wetland complex and evaluated for malformations.[12] Among the 687 adults, 54 (7.9%) were malformed. Of these 54 adults, 46 (85%) had missing (ectrodactyly), extra (polyphalangy) or dwarfed digits (brachydactyly).[12] Among the 1259 larvae, 102 were malformed, with 94 (92%) of the malformations involving ectrodactyly, polyphalangy, and brachydactyly.[12] Results showed few differences in the frequency of malformations among life-history changes, suggesting that malformed larvae do not suffer substantially higher mortality than their adult conspecifics.[12] Cats and Dogs In a “Journal of Heredity” published by the Oxford Journals a study was performed to test allele frequencies in domestic cats. Among the 265 cats observed, there were 101 males and 164 females. Only one cat was recorded to have the ectrodactyly abnormality[14], illustrating this rare and unique disease. According to M.P. Ferreira, a case of ectrodactyly was found in a two month old male mixed Terrier dog.[15] In another study, Carrig and co-workers also reported a series of 14 dogs[16] with this abnormality proving that although ectrodactyly is an uncommon occurrence for dogs, it is not entirely unheard of. Human Genetic Disorders Associated with Ectrodactyly Ectrodactyly is frequently seen with other congenital anomalies, or other birth defects, and may be caused by genetic factors or by exposure of the embryo to environmental factors.[4] Syndromes in which ectrodactyly is associated with other abnormalities can occur when two or more genes are affected by a chromosomal rearrangement.[4] Disorders associated with ectrodactyly include Ectrodactyly-Ectodermal Dysplasia-Clefting (EEC) syndrome, which is closely correlated to the ADULT syndrome and Limb-mammary (LMS) syndrome, Ectrodactyly-Cleft Palate (ECP) syndrome, Ectrodactyly-Ectodermal Dysplasia-Macular Dystrophy (EEM) syndrome, Ectrodactyly-Fibular Aplasia/Hypoplasia (EFA) syndrome, and Ectrodactyly-Polydactyly. Note that there are more than 50 syndromes and associations distinguished in the London Dysmorphology Database[6], so the complete list is not written above. Famous People with Ectrodactyly * Bree Walker[1] -Once a popular television anchor woman in Los Angeles, she has appeared in the television drama “Nip/Tuck” as an inspirational character who battles her disease and counsels another family who have children with ectrodactyly. * Grady Stiles Sr. and Grady Stiles Jr. * Vadoma Tribe in Africa * Mikhail Tal, chess World Champion” ABCD Nummus-Liber…Collector And Dealer Of History

Details & Abbreviations We are life APS members with above 30,000 ebay positive feedback. With millions of stamps sold every week, it is impossible to provide detail description on every stamp. But we are committed to do the best we possibly can on description. 'Mint" is unused stamp and hinged. 'NH' is mint never hinged. 'NC' is not counted. For higher value US stamp marked with a retail value, we check gum condition, grill size, shade, secret mark, watermark etc. For example, a stamp with no gum, are quoted Scott retail value for no gum. We will try to include Scott # and above details when time permit. We do examine perforation, type, WMK, and size for US W/F stamps within a US stamp collection, but do not provide guarantee, and we do not count W/F stamps within a large US stamp collection in our estimated value. The W/F stamps within a US stamp collection will be at your risk. We will verify the Scott retail value mentioned in the description, or examine any higher value US stamps marked with a retail value. Given the large volumes of stamps that we sell every week, for a US stamp collection/large lots, we may NOT examine every US stamp unless marked with a retail value. For example, a US stamp placed in the position of Scott #599A, or marked as such by its former owner in an album, may NOT be examined by us. However, we will check this stamp if it was marked #599A, $120. Furthermore, we be more than happy to check any particular stamp for you upon request. In average, we receive hundreds of emails every day, and we usually will answer every mail within hours during business hours. Our office for customer service are closed on Wednesday and Sunday. So an email message sent to us after 5PM Tuesday won't be answered until Thursday morning. The stamps we are offering come from wide range of sources. Most lots are offered intact as received. For large collection lots, some stamps could be removed by its former owner(s) before consigned to us. All items with obvious faults, or questionable items noted by us are usually not counted in estimated value. Such items usually are offered as a bonus. For lots with 10 or more stamps, that are 60 years old or older, typical mixed condition are to be expected. The stamps pre-1940 are usually hinged unless mentioned otherwise. In general, we use the most current Scott catalog for US/Canada stamps, Gibbons for British stamps, and Michel or Yvert for the rest of the countries. With 40,000 or more new images every week, we only keep the images for one week after the item was sold. So please save the images in your computer after the auction close. We can also put it back upon request. Shipping Charges for buyers within mainland USA: We using UPS Ground service, because it is insured (required by paypal) and are more reliable. While USPS (not as reliable) and other shipping service is also available upon request. In general, small package is about $10 to $14, large package is about $16 to $35 depend on distance to NYS. If you pay by eCheck through Paypal, it usually takes 7-14 days to clear (3-6 weeks if outside USA). For bid is an original circa 1910 real photo postcard showing famous "bloomer girls" FEMALE baseball star player Myrtle Rowe in uniform with a fielder’s glove on her left hand, ready to catch a baseball. This wonderful image shows Rowe in full uniform (including dark dress and emblems on her uniform top). She looks very focused and stern! Miss Rowe was apparently signed to a semi-professional baseball contract, to play for the “Antler Athletic Club” in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. The postcard was never mailed and has an “AZO” stamp box with all arrows up! This is a terrific old piece of baseball history. The back of the hand has writing and a stamp from the Bain News Service of New York (original to the 1910’s era). There is some glue residue to the back, too. Please let me know if you have any questions whatsoever. I will ship the item for $3.00 DOMESTIC California residents pay 9.75 percent sales tax on items shipped within California unless you have a resale license. Please inquire for foreign shipping costs; I’ll be happy to provide them... USPS INSURANCE will be added to purchases over one hundred dollars. Thanks for looking and happy bidding.
